Romualdas Gurevicius was born in Plunge, Lithuania and in 1974 graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of Vilnius University receiving a diploma of Public Health and Epidemiology. At the same year he started as research fellow at the Lithuanian Cancer Research Institute and subsequently became head of the Cancer Control Department, Head of the Lithuanian Cancer Registry and Research Director of Lithuanian Cancer Center. Gurevicius was awarded IARC Research Training Fellowship of 1983, and for 2 years worked at IARC under the supervision of Dr Calum Muir. In 1988 he defended his PhD thesis on Lung cancer Epidemiology in Lithuania. During his 19 years career in the Cancer Research Institute his major research area was in cancer control and epidemiology, with particular interest in lung and prostate cancer.

Between 1993 and 2007 he had an academic Appointment at Vilnius University as Associate Professor and chair of the Center of Social Medicine, and has been teaching epidemiology, social statistics, biostatistics and Health Care Systems for the students of the Medical Faculty. Dr Gurevicius was scientific supervisor of 10 successfully defended PhD theses at Vilnius University.

From 2007 Dr Gurevicius has been working as a Head of Health Information Center, Institute of Hygiene (Vilnius, Lithuania) and his research interests broadened to the monitoring of health inequalities and mapping disease spatial distribution using morbidity and mortality data from different diseases. He applied and developed different PYLL methodologies in measuring health inequalities, widely applied avoidable mortality concept in assessing inequalities of mortality. Lately he broadly applied GIS technology in assessment of avoidable hospitalizations and accessibility of health care in Lithuania which supports decisions for building more efficient and evidence based health care system.

Dr Gurevicius actively participated in the development of health care policy in Lithuania. He is a coauthor of the first and second National Health Programs of Lithuania. For 15 years he was deputy chair of the National Health Board under the Parliament of Lithuania and 10 years as a Research Expert at the Lithuanian Research Council.  Currently he is member of the National Statistics Council, responsible for the country’s health related statistics.  He has authored and co-authored more than 170 scientific publications.
