Umberto Veronesi RIP

November 9, 2016

On November 8th, 2016 the world lost one of the great men of modern Medicine with the passing of Umberto Veronesi. A pioneering surgeon who made many of the great contributions to breast cancer care and treatment, the survival and quality of life of millions of women with breast cancer have benefited from Veronesi’s lifetime dedication and work.

Professor Veronesi’s leadership established the Istituto Nazionale Tumori in Milan as a world class centre for research and treatment. He established the Istituto Europeo di Oncologia in 1991 and the hospital section opened in 1994. It quickly developed an international reputation in Oncology. He did much more including serving as Minister of Health of Italy and developing the Europe Against Cancer programme at the European Union Ministerial Meeting in Milan in 1985.

It was a great personal pleasure to work closely with Veronesi and we enjoyed a marvellous period working in the Istituto Europeo di Oncologia in Milan between 1991 and 2003. We became and remained friends as well as professional colleagues and his passing is a great sadness and personal loss.

In addition, others at iPRI worked directly or in close cooperation with the Istituto in Milan including Philippe Autier, Alberto d’Onofrio and Mathieu Boniol. We all benefitted and are better from the experience.

Peter Boyle
President, iPRI
