A monograph has been published as Special Issue of the journal Oral Diseases (Boyle P, Koechlin A and Autier P. Mouthwash use and the Prevention of Plaque, Gingivitis and Caries. 2014; 20 (s1):1-68).
Careful quantitative assessment of data regarding use of mouthwash reveals that there is clear evidence of benefit from use in terms of reducing the risk of dental plaque, gingivitis and dental caries and that there are no major adverse effects associated with its use. Oral disease is a very common phenomenon globally and it is apparent that mouthwash use makes a significant contribution to Public Health.
